Why do people with herpes stromal keratitis tend to reject corneal transplants, and how we can prevent it?

Research Description

  • Recurrent bouts of herpes stromal keratitis lead to progressive scarring of the cornea with increasing visual impairment
  • The only resolution for a badly scarred cornea is corneal transplantation, but patients with herpes keratitis reject corneal transplants at a much higher rate than other patients
  • This project is designed to determine the mechanisms that lead to transplant rejection in HSV-1 infected corneas, and devise means to inhibit these mechanisms
